The Toy Story film series began in 1995 with the release of the first animated movie of the same name. It follows a mix of toys, with a focus on Sheriff Woody, a cowboy doll, being cast aside by his owner, Andy, in favor of spaceman Buzz Lightyear.
The film wowed audiences following its release, as it was the first feature-length film to use computer-generated imagery throughout.
Due to the filmâs popularity, three more Toy Story films have been released in theaters over the years, and excitement is building for the release of the fifth installment.
Fans of the film series will be delighted to learn that Toy Story 5 will return on June 19, 2026, featuring the voice cast you know and love, as well as some new additions.
The Plot
Toy Story 5 will follow Woodyâs mission to help abandoned toys find their owners, leaving Jessie in charge of Bonnieâs room and Buzz Lightyear as her second-in-command.
Unfortunately, the toys must watch as 8-year-old Bonnie becomes engrossed in her latest gift: a frog-like tablet called Lily Pad.
According to Pete Docter, Pixarâs Chief Creative Officer, Lilypad has different opinions about what Bonnie needs, which is likely to cause conflict with Woody, Buzz, Jesse, and the rest of the toys.
He stated, âItâs a new tech tablet, which allows Bonnie to chat with her friends and play games and other things too, but Lily Pad can also be a bit sneaky and prickly to be around. And, because in her mind, itâs a lot better to be socialized, and Bonnie needs to move on from toys.â
Docter also stated the filmâs pacing will differ from other films in the series, believing it is essential, as modern cinema has âsped up.â
Tim Allen, who voices Buzz Lightyear, recently commented that the film will emphasize Jessieâs journey.
Also, he confirmed there will be a Buzz Lightyear Army, as a âwhole bunch of Buzzes are involvedâ in a separate story, as theyâre reportedly marooned on a desert island following a shipping container washing ashore.
The Voice Cast
The main Toy Story voice cast has returned for the fifth instalment. Tom Hanks will reprise his role as Woody, and Tim Allen is back as his right-hand man, Buzz Lightyear.
Joan Cusack returns as Jessie, Tony Hale voices Forky, and Ernie Hudson slips back into the role of Combat Carl. While other voice actors havenât been confirmed, iconic characters such as Rex, Slinky, Mr. Potato Head, and Hamm are expected to return,
Many famous faces have also joined the cast to voice some brand-new characters. For instance, Conan OâBrien will play Smarty Pants, a vibrant potty-training toy, and Anna Faris is Lily Pad, a frog-like tablet computer.
The Creative Team
Andrew Stanton, who has written every screenplay for the Toy Story franchise, returned to write Toy Story 5. Also, it will mark his first time in the directorâs chair for the film series, despite directing other iconic animated movies, such as Finding Nemo (2003), WALL-E (2008), and Finding Dory (2016).
McKenna Harris joined the film as co-director and is best known for directing the animated short film Ciao Alberto (2021) and was a story supervisor on Inside Out 2 (2024).
John Lasseter, co-creator of Toy Story, had no creative role in Toy Story 5, marking his first absence from the series, as he left Pixar in 2018.
