The first season of The Witcher arrived on Netflix in December 2019, earning audience and critical acclaim.
The compelling fantasy drama was also praised for its animation and special effects, which have earned the show multiple awards over the years.
The much-loved TV show is based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s book series, The Witcher. It is set in the fictional medieval landmass called the Continent, following the legend of Geralt of Rivia, Princess Ciri, and Yennefer of Vengerberg.
While the first three seasons starred Henry Cavill in the lead role, the British actor has stepped away from the show due to creative differences and a desire to work on other projects.
As a result, Australian actor Liam Hemsworth will replace Cavill as Geralt of Rivia in seasons four and five of The Witcher, which were reportedly filmed back-to-back.
When the show started filming, showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich commented, “It is with huge pride that we begin shooting our penultimate season of The Witcher with a stellar cast, including some exciting new additions, led by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia.”
Liam Hemsworth also said in a statement, “As a Witcher fan, I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia.”
The fourth season of The Witcher will arrive on Netflix on Thursday, October 30, 2025. It will be followed by a fifth and final season, which is scheduled for release in 2026.
The Cast of Season 4
Thanks to the major cast replacements and new members, season 4 of The Witcher will be a little different for fans of the show.
In addition to replacing Henry Cavill with Liam Hemsworth, Kim Bodnia has stepped back from the show due to scheduling conflicts and has been replaced by Peter Mullan.

The Production
Filming started on season four of The Witcher at Longcross Studios in Longcross, England, in April 2024. The production is believed to have wrapped at the end of October 2025.
During filming, Netflix announced it had renewed The Witcher for a fifth and final season, which reportedly started filming in March 2025.
As the two seasons were filmed back-to-back, there is expected to be a shorter gap between the Netflix premieres.
Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich recently told Netflix, “We’re thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski’s books to an epic and satisfying conclusion. It wouldn’t be our show if we didn’t push our family of characters to their absolute limit — stay tuned to see how the story ends.”
The Plot
Seasons four and five are expected to cover Andrzej Sapkowski’s three remaining books from The Witcher saga: Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake.
Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer will need to travel through the war-torn Continent overrun with enemies.
While on the run, Ciri will fall in with The Rats, a group of young outlaws, which is expected to result in a violent confrontation with Leo Bonhart, a bounty hunter.
Meanwhile, Yennefer will be focused on regrouping the mages after the fall of the Brotherhood while searching for Ciri.
