The Mandalorian and Grogu will arrive in movie theaters on May 22, 2026, and will be a continuation of the Disney+ series The Mandalorian (2019-2023).
Co-writers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni originally planned to write a fourth season of the hit show, but it was delayed following the 2024 Hollywood labor disputes.
Lucasfilm then chose to move forward with a Mandalorian film rather than produce season four, which is likely to drive many Star Wars fans to movie theaters in 2026.
The movie will follow on from the events of season three, as Din Djarin adopted Grogu and started a new life in Nevarro. However, the fall of the Galactic Empire will see them embark on a dangerous journey to protect the galaxy.
The Plot
The Mandalorian and Grogu follow the New Republic’s enlistment of Din Djarin and his apprentice, Grogu, after the fall of the Galactic Empire, and while the galaxy is threatened by the remaining Imperial warlords.
The Cast
Pedro Pascal appears in the lead role as Din Djarin/The Mandalorian, a veteran Mandalorian bounty hunter from the outer reaches of the galaxy.
He is joined on screen by Grogu, an infant of the Yoda species, created through puppetry and animatronics enhanced by visual effects.
Sigourney Weaver stars in the film as Ward, the leader of the New Republic’s Adelphi Rangers who once served as a Rebel Alliance pilot.
Jeremy Allen White plays Rotta the Hutt, who is the son of Jabba the Hutt, a deceased crime lord.
Additionally, Jonny Coyne appears as an Imperial Warlord and the leader of the remnants of the Galactic Empire.
The film’s co-writer, Dave Filoni, will also reprise his role as Trapper Wolf from The Mandalorian, who is a New Republic X-wing pilot.
Also, members of the Anzellan species from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) and Zeb from the animated TV series Star Wars Rebels will appear in the upcoming movie.
The Creative Team
Jon Favreau directed The Mandalorian and Grogu and co-wrote the screenplay alongside Dave Filoni.
Favreau is best known for directing Elf (2003), the Iron Man film series (2008-2013), The Avengers film series (2012-2019), and many more movies.
Also, he is an acclaimed actor, starring in box office successes, such as Swingers (1996), Deep Impact (1998), Four Christmases (2008), and Chef (2014), to name a few films.
Dave Filoni is best known for co-writing and co-directing The Mandalorian alongside Favreau. Also, he wrote and directed Star Wars: Ahsoka (2023-present) and co-wrote The Book of Bobba Fett (2021-2022).
After composing the first two seasons of The Mandalorian and creating the third season’s themes, Ludwig Göransson returned to compose the score for The Mandalorian and Grogu in September 2025.
Production
Filming reportedly started on The Mandalorian and Grogu in California in June 2024.
Production was expected to run for 92 days and comprised 54 cast members, 500 crew members, and 3,5000 background extras. The movie is thought to have wrapped in early December 2024.
Since the movie wrapped, Rachel Goodlet Katz worked hard editing the film, who is best known for her work on the third season of The Mandalorian.
