What is the Release Date for Season 3 of The Last of Us?
HBO hasn’t provided fans with an official release date for the third season of The Last of Us. However, CEO Casey Bloys has confirmed it will arrive in 2027.
He recently commented, “The series is definitely planned for 2027. Craig Mazin is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season. It hasn’t been decided yet, and I’m following Craig’s lead on that.”
A two-year wait is typical for the show, as there was a two-year gap between season one, which premiered in 2023, and the second season, which aired in 2025.
What’s the Plot?
The third season of The Last of Us will continue to provide a TV adaptation of The Last of Us Part II video game.
As a result, it is believed that season three will follow the perspective of Abby, who viewers were introduced to in season two. She’ll play a more central role in the story, taking over the leading performance from Ellie, who will still appear in the third season.
The third season is expected to follow Abby during the days when Ellie and Dina were searching for her and her friends.
In addition to showing Abby’s perspective, fans will follow Ellie and Dina’s journey to Santa Barbara before a final showdown with Abby, remaining true to the game’s story.
Also, there will be a huge focus on the rising conflict between the Washington Liberation Front (WLF) and the Seraphites cults.
Who Will Star in Season 3?
Kaitlyn Dever is expected to return to season three of The Last of Us, reprising her role as Abby.
Fans will be thrilled to know Bella Ramsey is back as Ellie, and Pedro Pascal may make an appearance through flashbacks, which was typical in the video game.
Other cast members expected to return include Isabela Merced as Dina, Gabriel Luna as Tommy, and Jeffrey Wright as Isaac.
Who Are the Showrunners?
It was recently announced that Neil Druckmann will step away from his role as co-creator and creative lead on The Last of Us.
He is reportedly leaving the show to focus more on his video game studio, Naughty Dog, which created the video game franchise.
Craig Mazin will, however, return as the showrunner of The Last of Us, and he’s currently shaping the creative direction for the third and potentially final season.
Is Season 3 Likely to be the Last?
As mentioned, Craig Mazin is reportedly deciding between another two seasons or a longer third season.
However, the showrunner recently stated he hopes the show will have a fourth and final season, as it might be impossible to squeeze the remainder of the story into a third season.
