Season one of The Abandons will premiere on Netflix on December 4, 2025, with all seven episodes arriving on the streaming service.
Set in the 1850s, it will follow conflicts involving various outlaw groups during the Old West period and features a phenomenal cast to bring the tale to life on the small screen.
The American western drama was created by Kurt Sutter, who has written some of the grittiest shows on TV in recent years, including The Shield and Sons of Anarchy.
Sutter reportedly came up with the idea for The Abandons before creating Sons of Anarchy, as the origins of the American Mafia inspired the show’s setting.
Despite creating the series and serving as the showrunner and head writer, Sutter left The Abandons due to creative differences with Netflix.
He departed after the streaming giant viewed rough cuts of the first episode, which was over 100 minutes long, forcing it to be split into two episodes that required additional filming.
Various sources have claimed Sutter left the show because his vision didn’t match the streaming service’s reported algorithm.
During an interview on Rich Poll Podcast alongside his wife, Katey Sagal, Sutter confirmed he departed The Abandons because he couldn’t continue writing and producing a TV show that didn’t align with his ideas and vision for his characters.
The Plot
The Abandons is set in the 1850s Old West and follows Fiona Nolan, a devout Irish woman who has struggled to conceive a child. Eager to start a family, she attempts to build a family by adopting four orphans, believing her actions have a higher purpose.
However, she quickly finds herself battling European aristocrats who are attempting to gain possession of her new home in Oregon.

Filming is believed to have started on The Abandons in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in Spring 2024. However, the production was delayed following union strikes
After Netflix viewed rough cuts from filming, Kurt Sutter departed the series in October 2024 with a few weeks of shooting remaining. As a result, Otto Bathurst, a director and executive producer, alongside Rob Askins, a co-executive producer, oversaw the remainder of production.
Gillian Anderson confirmed the first season wrapped in late October 2024.
