Supergirl will arrive in movie theaters on June 26, 2026, marking the second film from the new DC universe.
The upcoming film is based on the 2021-2022 comic book Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, and will be part of DCâs Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
The iconic comic book character was introduced in The Flash (2023), but the role was portrayed by Sashe Calle. However, the movieâs plans changed after James Gunn and Peter Safran became co-CEOs of DC Studios, leading to Milly Alcock being cast in the lead role.
The Plot
Supergirl follows Kara Zor-El/Supergirl as she celebrates her 21st birthday with an intergalactic adventure with her dog, Krypto.
During her travels, she meets a young Ruthye Marye Knoll before encountering a tragedy that causes the two to hunt for the Krem of the Yellow Hills on a âmurderous quest for revenge.â
The Cast
Supergirl will feature the following cast:
- Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl
- David Krumholtz as Supergirlâs father, Zor-El
- Emily Beecham as Supergirlâs mother, Alura In-Ze
- Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills
- Eva Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll
- Jason Momoa as Lobo
Kara/Supergirl will also have a super-powered dog, called Krypto, who appeared in Superman (2025).
According to producer James Gunn, Supergirl is more ârougher and grittier and edgierâ than Superman. She watched everyone around her die while being raised on a floating chunk of a destroyed Krypton, while Superman grew up with loving parents on Earth.
He claimed Superman is a hopeful hero while Supergirl has a âpixie-ish, but very attitudinal characterâ stemming from her traumatic upbringing.
The Production
Filming for Supergirl reportedly started at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, England, on January 13, 2025.
Jason Mamoa and David Krumholtz reportedly wrapped their Supergirl scenes in April 2025.
Additional scenes were reportedly shot in late April, and production wrapped in England by May 10, 2025. However, extra scenes were expected to be shot in Iceland.
The Creative Team
Supergirl was directed by Craig Gillespie after directing a string of box office successes, including Lars and the Real Girl (2007), I, Tonya (2017), and Cruella (2021).
The screenplay was written by Ana Nogueira, best known as a playwright, who wrote the stage plays Empathitrax (2016) and Which Way to the Stage (2022). Also, she co-wrote the short film We Win (2018) and has appeared in various TV shows, including Blue Bloods, The Vampire Diaries, and Hightown.
Nogueira was originally attached to Supergirl in 2022 when it was set to become a spin-off from The Flash. However, James Gunn and Peter Safran were impressed with her work, resulting in her signing a new screenwriting deal with DC.
Due to the strength of Nogueiraâs script, Gunn and Safran opted for Supergirl to become the second film from the new DCU, which they hadnât originally planned.
As a result, Gunn wrote the following Instagram post: âA hearty public welcome to Ana Nogueira to the DC Studios family. Ana is an amazing writer whose screenplay adaptation of Woman of Tomorrow is above and beyond anything I hoped it would be. Weâre excited to be moving forward on this unique take on Supergirl in this beautiful, star-spanning tale.â
Rob Hardy served as cinematographer on Supergirl and is best known for his work on Boy A (2007), Ex Machina (2014), Mission: Impossible â Fallout (2018), and Civil War (2024).
