Resident Evil is the best-selling horror game series of all time, selling more than 170 million copies internationally, as of March 2025.
Credited for establishing the survival horror genre, the acclaimed video game series has inspired live-action movies, novels, comic books, audiobooks, and merchandise.
The franchise has delighted fans since the first game was released in 1996, and the ninth title, Resident Evil Requiem, will arrive on February 27, 2026, promising more tense, action-packed gameplay.
Following the release announcement at Summer Game Fest in June 2025, which included an official trailer, the game was added to more than one million wish lists across all available platforms.
To increase hype ahead of its release, a playable demo was available at the 2025 Gamescom and Pax West conventions, which were held in August 2025.
The Premise
Resident Evil Requiem will follow Grace Ashcroft, an FBI technical analyst, as she investigates a series of mysterious deaths at Wrenwood Hotel, where her mother, a former investigative journalist, passed away eight years earlier.
The game is set in Raccoon City, approximately 30 years after the destruction in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999).
According to Capcom, Grace Ashcroft is an introverted bookworm who often feels powerless, especially compared to past protagonists from the hit series.
The Gameplay
Director Koshi Nakanishi originally planned to develop Resident Evil Requiem as an online, open-world, multiplayer video game.
However, the plan was ruled out during early development, with developers opting for a traditional single-player game, which is often popular with many Resident Evil fans.
For this reason, it is expected to have adopted more of the franchise’s old school horror style, focusing on tension and atmosphere, which is likely to delight many fans worldwide.
Resident Evil Requiem is expected to feature many classic elements from the series, such as Green Herbs, puzzles, and a stalker-type enemy.
Gamers will have the choice of a first-person or third-person viewing option, which they can adjust in the main menu.
Previews of the game indicate Resident Evil Requiem may feature two campaigns. The first might be a survival horror game with Grace as the protagonist, and the other might be another character, possibly Leon S. Kennedy, who provides more action.
The Platforms
As you may have expected, Resident Evil Requiem will be available to play on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows (Steam).
It was announced during the September 2025 Nintendo Direct Presentation that the survival horror game will be released on Nintendo Switch 2, alongside other titles, including Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (2017) and Resident Evil Village (2021).
The Development
Resident Evil Requiem was directed by Koshi Nakanishi, who is the brain behind many games from the video game series, including Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, and Resident Evil: Revelations.
Like every game since Resident Evil: Biohazard, Resident Evil Requiem was developed using Capcom’s RE engine. It is well-regarded for creating faster video game animations, as the tools support motion matching, modular rigging, motion retargeting, and procedural animation.
It allows Capcom to avoid common pitfalls during video game development, which many developers frequently encounter when using a singular engine.
Fans can expect an elevated gaming experience when playing Resident Evil Requiem, as it will include path-traced lighting, such as ray traced shadows, ray traced global illumination, and ray traced ambient occlusion.
