Mortal Kombat II is the long-awaited sequel to Mortal Kombat (2021), which is based on the iconic video game of the same name.
After five years of waiting, the film is scheduled to arrive in movie theaters on May 8, 2026, with the main cast reprising their roles, as well as new cast members.
It could mark the second of five Mortal Kombat films, as actor Joe Taslim commented in April 2021 that he was contracted for four more movies.
The Plot
Mortal Kombat II will follow the champions of Earthrealm compete against the warriors of the Outworld.
They are forced into battle to resist Shao Kahnâs rule, as his rise to power as the Emperor of the Outworld is threatening survival. If they fail to win, Kahn will launch an invasion to conquer the Earthrealm.
Also, it will follow the recruitment of Johnny Cage, which was teased in the 2021 film, exploring his journey from a former Hollywood star to an Earthrealm champion.

The Production
Filming reportedly started on Mortal Kombat II at Village Roadshow Studios in the Gold Coast, Australia, on June 22, 2023.
The production was halted soon after due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike and recommenced in November 2023 once the strike was over. Filming reportedly wrapped on the movie in late January 2024.
The Creative Team
Simon McQuoid returned to direct Mortal Kombat II, as he successfully directed the first film in 2021, which was his directorial debut.
Earlier in his career, the Australian filmmaker was best known for directing various commercials and the short film The Stone Forest.
Jeremy Slater wrote the screenplay for Mortal Kombat II, and stated he was eager to âembrace some of the weirdnessâ from the Mortal Kombat video game franchise.
Slater is best known for co-writing Fantastic Four (2015), Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), and the upcoming film, Coyote vs. Acme (2026). Also, he has written on various hit TV shows, including The Exorcist and The Umbrella Academy.
Stephen F. Windon served as Mortal Kombat IIâs cinematographer and is best known for his work on The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006), Fast & Furious 6 (2013), Star Trek Beyond (2016), and Sonic the Hedgehog (2020).
The sequelâs producers include Todd Garner, James Wan, E. Bennett Walsh, Toby Emmerich, and Simon McQuoid. It was produced by Warner Bros.â New Line Cinema, Atomic Monster, and Broken Road Productions Fireside Films.
The Future of the Mortal Kombat Film Series
At New York Comic Con in October 2025, it was announced that a third Mortal Kombat film was in development. Also, acclaimed screenwriter Jeremy Slater has reportedly joined the third Mortal Kombat installment.
