The Minions film series is a prequel to Despicable Me (2010), following the silly yet mischievous minions before they became Gru’s loyal henchmen.
Due to the box office success of Minions (2015) and Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022), the third film from the franchise is scheduled for release on July 1, 2025, securing the lucrative Independence Day weekend slot.
The Illumination movies have enjoyed success in the slot in recent years, as Minions grossed an eye-watering $1.159 billion internationally.
As it crossed the billion-dollar mark, it is one of the highest-grossing animated movies of all time. Also, Minions: Rise of Gru was deemed a box office hit, earning $940.5 million.
As Minions 3 has the same creative team on board, and the main cast is likely to return, the animated film is expected to perform well at the worldwide box office in 2026 and has the potential to become one of the highest-grossing movies of the year.
Also, its release date was pushed up from summer 2027 to swap with Shrek 5, suggesting confidence in the movie before production is over.
The Plot
The official plot hasn’t been released, but Minions 3 is expected to be a continuation of the much-loved prequel series.
As a result, it is likely to follow the Minions’ adventures before they became Gru’s dedicated but silly henchmen.
Rumors are circulating online that Minions 3 will focus on Young Gru attending villain school, or that it might feature the Mega Minions, as seen in Despicable Me 4. However, you’ll need to wait patiently for an official plot announcement.
The Cast
Universal Pictures has yet to release the full cast list, but the following actors are expected to return to Minions 3.
- Pierre Coffin as the Minions
- Steve Carell as Felonius Gru
- Julie Andrews as Marlena Gru
The official cast is likely to be announced closer to the movie’s July release date. Keep your eyes peeled for an announcement.
The Production
Minions 3 is currently in production and is scheduled to arrive in movie theaters on July 1, 2026.
The film was originally set for a 2027 release, but Universal Studios swapped its release date with Shrek 5, which was pushed back to December 23, 2026.
The July 1 release date will provide Minions 3 with a prime release date, as it has secured the sought-after July 4th holiday slot. Past Minions and Despicable Me movies have dominated the Independence Day weekend in the past, suggesting Minions 3 will be another box office success.
The Creative Team
Brian Lynch returned to write Minions 3 after penning the first Minions film and the story for Minions: The Rise of Gru alongside Matthew Fogel.
Lynch is best known for writing Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem (2012), The Secret Life of Pets (2016), The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019), and The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025).
Brian Lynch also directed Minions 3 alongside Pierre Coffin, who directed Minions with Kyle Bada.
Coffin is best known for directing Despicable Me (2010), Despicable Me 2 (2013), and Despicable Me 3 (2017).
Also, Coffin has provided the voice of every Minion in the much-loved franchise since it started.
