Assessing the Political Landscape
At the time of writing, there are two parties in Canada who may win the general election.
The first is the current party that is in power, the Liberal Party, which was headed up until recently by Justin Trudeau. The other is the Conservatives, headed up by Pierre Poilievre.
According to The Sports Geek, the odds are not in favor of the once-popular Trudeau. As both he and the Liberal Party have been in power since 2015, there has been a shift in the general consensus of the Canadian population. In short, their confidence in him has eroded, which has caused him to step down and has shaken their support base. In the last few weeks, former banker Mark Carney has taken over as the leader of the Liberal Party.
This uncertainty so close to an election has put the leader of the Conservatives, Pierre Poilievre, as the favorite to win the election.
Why Would There Be an Early Election?
There has been speculation that the Canadian General Election will happen sooner than scheduled since September 2024.
In short, on September 4, 2024, the NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh stated that he would be pulling his party out of a deal with the Liberal Party. This deal was called the supply-and-confidence agreement. This meant that the Liberal Party no longer had the support of the MPs, which is needed to maintain power. As you can guess, when the agreement was signed, it guaranteed that the Liberals had that support, and with it broken, it looks shaky.
Pair this with the average person in Canada losing faith in the Liberal Party, and the election could take place sooner than the scheduled date.
