Date: Thursday, February 12, to Sunday, February 22, 2026
Location: Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, Germany
The 2026 Berlin International Film Festival, also known as the 76th Berlinale, is one of Europe’s “Big Three” film festivals alongside France’s Cannes Film Festival and Italy’s Venice Film Festival.
Also, it is one of the “Big Five” film festivals internationally alongside Canada’s Toronto Film Festival and the United States’ Sundance Film Festival.
Due to its exciting program and prestige, thousands of people annually attend the event held at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, Germany.
The much-loved festival serves as a platform for international cinema and hosts many professional events featured under the Berlinale Pro program, including the European Film Market and World Cinema Fund Day.
The biggest event of the festival is, of course, the Golden Bear and Silver Bear awards, which recognize the best films at the event.
The Berlinale Program
The 2026 Berlin International Film Festival is traditionally divided into the following sections.
The Awards
The award competition section is the Berlin International Film Festival’s main draw, with filmmakers eager to accept the prestigious Golden Bear award.
Presented since 1951, the Golden Bear is the main award, recognizing the best film of the festival. It is viewed by many as one of the most prestigious film festival awards, alongside Cannes’ Palme d’Or and Venice’s Golden Lion.
The Silver Bear award is presented to the Golden Bear runner-up, which is the second biggest prize of the festival.
The Silver Bear Jury Prize is for the third-best film at the event, chosen by the jury, and the Silver Bear for Best Director is presented to the filmmaker with outstanding direction.
Many actors and actresses will be eager to accept the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance, as the gender-neutral award is given to an outstanding lead.
Other accolades include: the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance, Silver Bear for Best Screenplay, and Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution.
More Silver Bear awards are presented as part of the Berlinale Shorts program, such as the Silver Bear Jury Prize (Short Film).
Panorama
The Panorama section showcases films that are structurally or aesthetically daring. The Berlin Film Festival describes the program as “explicitly queer, explicitly feminist, and explicitly political.”
Berlinale Special
Berlinale Special annually screens a diverse selection of extraordinary films, including thought-provoking movies or high-profile premieres.
Berlinale Shorts
Berlinale Shorts has screened exceptional short films that explore various cinematic possibilities.
Perspectives
The Perspectives program, also known as Perspektives Deutsches Kino, is a juried competition featuring feature films from first-time international filmmakers.
Forum
The Forum section provides an in-depth analysis of the medium of film and its various experimental forms. It is independently organized and curated by the Arsenal Institute for Film and Video Art.
Generation
The Generation section focuses on films resonating with children and teenagers. It’s a competition program split between two categories: Kplus (children) and 14plus (teenagers).
