The British Academy Film Awards, often referred to as the BAFTAs, were originally held in 1949 to honor the finest British and international film contributions.
The awards are deemed the highest honor in British cinema, serving as the prestigious equivalent to the Laurence Olivier awards for theater, the BRIT Awards for music, and the BAFTA TV Awards for television.
The most prestigious accolade of the night is Best Film, serving as a British version of the Academy Award’s Best Picture. It differs from Outstanding British Film, which requires movies to meet specific British criteria for eligibility.
Three million people reportedly watch the prestigious ceremony each year. Also, footage from the 2025 ceremony attracted an incredible 64 million video views across various official BAFTA social media platforms, including YouTube and Instagram.
The 2026 Ceremony
The 79th BAFTA Film Awards will recognize the finest British and international films screened in British cinemas in 2025.
The 2026 host hasn’t been confirmed, but many fans hope David Tennant will return, which would mark his third consecutive year in the role.
The following three rounds will shape the voting process for the BAFTA awards: longlisting, nominations, and winners.
BAFTA Film Members will determine the longlist, as they will cast votes for various categories, including Best Film and Outstanding British Film.
BAFTA juries will determine other categories, such as Outstanding Debut. BAFTA Chapters will shape the outcome for more technical fields. For instance, a Cinematography Chapter will vote for the cinematography category nominees and winners.
The EE Rising Star Award is the only category that is voted for by the British public.
