The Writers Guild of America Awards, also known as the WGA Awards, were first presented in 1949 to honor outstanding writing achievements in film, television, radio, and other media.
Presented by the WGA East and WGA West, the awards are peer-voted by members of the Writers Guild of America, making it one of the highest honors for US writers.
As the WGA Awards solely honor writers, the prestigious event is often viewed as a precursor to the Academy Awards’ screenplay categories.
The 2026 Ceremony
The 2026 Writers Guild of America Awards will be presented simultaneously in two locations: the JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. Live in Los Angeles, California, and the Edison Ballroom in New York City, New York.
The ceremony is split to represent the Writers Guild of America West in Los Angeles and the Writers Guild of America East in New York City.
Each ceremony will represent talented writers in specific media. For instance, WGAW primarily represents writers in broadcasting, soap operas, digital news, and late-night television, and WGAE is at the heart of film and TV. The prestigious ceremonies will take place on both coasts on Sunday, March 8, 2026.
The film awards are presented to films that had a theatrical release during the previous year. Also, TV series produced and broadcast between December 1, 2024, and November 30, 2025, are eligible.
The dual award shows will be broadcast on WGAW’s official YouTube channel, and real-time updates and announcements will be published on the WGAW and WGAE’s official social media platforms.
The Voting Timeline
The submissions for all 2026 Writers Guild of America Awards’ categories opened on September 15, 2025, and will close on December 5, 2025.
Online voting for preliminary drama series and screenplays will run from January 6 to January 20, 2026.
The nominations for screenplays, television, radio/audio, streaming, news, and promotional writing will be announced on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.
The deadline for the final series and screenplay online voting is February 13, 2026, and the Writers Guild Awards nominee panel will be held on an unconfirmed date in the same month.
