The Gotham Independent Film Awards were first hosted in 1991 to honor many exceptional independent films throughout the calendar year.
As the event is annually held in New York City, it earned its name from one of the city’s nicknames, Gotham.
The respected event, which is a black-tie gala dinner, was initially introduced to shine a spotlight on films primarily made in the northeastern region of the United States.
However, the award number expanded from six to nine in 2004 to include movies originating in Los Angeles and internationally.
Many world-renowned industry professionals often attend the annual ceremony, including acclaimed filmmakers, top critics, major studio executives, and award-winning actors and actresses.
As a result, the Gotham Independent Film Awards has become a popular event on the early award season circuit.

The award ceremony is unlikely to have a host, as it hasn’t had one since the 27th Gotham Independent Film Awards in 2017.

It was recently announced that Tessa Thompson was chosen for the award for her exceptional performance in Hedda.
The competitive and non-competitive awards are both presented at the black-tie gala dinner on December 1, 2025.
