The Criticsâ Choice Film Awards were first held in 1996 to honor the finest cinematic achievements from the previous year.
Originally hosted during the second week of January, the event claimed the first Sunday of the month in 2022 to avoid membership diversity issues and increase viewership.
The nominees and winners are chosen by members of the Criticsâ Choice Association (CCA). The ceremony recognizes the most outstanding films, performances, writing, and creative and technical skills in various genres.
Unlike other prestigious award ceremonies, the event honors various films for their cinematic, televised, or streaming achievements.
As the nominees and winners are chosen by respected film critics, the Criticsâ Choice Film Awards are often viewed as the most accurate predictors of the Academy Awards.
For this reason, many movie fans eagerly await the ceremonyâs Best Picture nominees and winner, as they may indicate Oscar success.
The 2026 Ceremony
The 31st Annual Criticsâ Choice Film Awards will return to the Barker Hanger in Santa Monica on Sunday, January 4, 2026.
The iconic event will be broadcast live on E! for its second consecutive year. Also, you can watch a live telecast of the ceremony on the USA Network from 7 a.m. / 10 p.m. (ET/PT).
The eventâs host hasnât been announced, but many fans are hoping Chelsea Handler will return to entertain audiences for a fourth consecutive year.
The Nominations Announcement
Film branch members of the Criticsâ Choice Association, who are active film critics, will vote for their main film award categories ahead of the 31st Criticsâ Choice Film Awards.
The CCA will announce the film nominees for the 31st Criticsâ Choice Film Awards on Friday, December 5, 2025.
However, the Below the Line nominees are voted for by a specialized group within the CCA who have expertise in technical fields.
Films are required to submit work for careful consideration in the Below the Line categories, which are chosen by the specialized group.
The Below the Line submission period opened on October 22, 2025, and the deadline ends on November 10, 2025. The Below the Line shortlist is scheduled to be announced via press release on Monday, November 24, 2025.
Members will receive ballots from November 25, 2025, and they must vote for the winner by Wednesday, December 3, 2025.
All voting CCA members must then vote for their worthy winner for the main awards and the Below the Line categories in the final round. They will each receive the final ballots on December 22, 2025, and the deadline for their votes is Friday, January 2, 2026.
It is the membersâ responsibility as respected film critics to watch all major theatrical releases before selecting nominees for all Criticsâ Choice Award categories. It ensures the right person receives a nomination for an award.
