Michael Greene, Rudy Perez, and Mauricio Abaroa founded the Latin Grammy Awards because Latin music was too big to fit into the annual Grammy Awards.
The first ceremony was held in September 2000, honoring the finest music of the year in Spanish or Portuguese.
For this reason, the award show typically celebrates music from Spain, Portugal, Latin America, and the Latino United States. For an act to be eligible for an accolade, 60% of its content must be recorded in Spanish or Portuguese.
Also, they must have had a commercial release in North America, Spain, Central America, South America, Portugal, or the Caribbean.
The 2026 Ceremony
The 26th Annual Latin Grammy Awards will return to the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, marking its seventh time at the iconic venue.
It will tie with Sin Cityâs Michelob Ultra Arena for the venue that has hosted the event the most times.
The three-hour ceremony will be telecast live on Univision, or you can watch it on HBO Max on Thursday, November 13, 2025.
The New Categories and Changes
The Latin Recording Academy recently announced that the 26th award ceremony will feature two new awards and changes to existing categories.
The two new categories are: Best Music for Visual Media and Best Roots Song.
Also, the Academy has renamed four categories. Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album is now known as Best Traditional Pop Album, Best Pop Vocal Album becomes Best Contemporary Pop Album, Best Urban Fusion/Performance has changed to Best Urban/Urban Fusion Performance, and Best Latin Childrenâs Album is Best Children’s Album.
