The Sundance Film Festival has been held in Utah every January since its inception in 1978.
Founded by actor and director Robert Redford, it is the largest independent film festival in the US, attracting a combined total of 423,234 in-person attendees and online views in 2023 alone.
It is well-respected for showcasing new films by international filmmakers, both from the United States and overseas.
The iconic event features prestigious competitive sections for dramatic films and documentaries, including feature films and shorts.
There are also various non-competitive sections, including New Frontier, Spotlight, NEXT, Midnight, Premieres, Documentary Premieres, Sundance Kids, and From the Collection.
Film Premieres
Many films and episodic projects from new and established filmmakers are expected to make their world premiere at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.
The film premieres are scheduled to take place between January 22 and January 27, 2026. The full schedule is expected to be announced in December 2025.
The film premieres will run throughout the festival, providing audiences with an opportunity to watch many exciting new movies scheduled for 2026.
The Final Utah Film Festival
The 2026 Sundance Festival will be the final festival to be held in Utah. In March 2025, it was announced that the iconic event will move to Boulder, Colorado, for the foreseeable future.
Special Screenings
To mark the final year in Utah, the 2026 Sundance Festival will provide special screenings of classic films to celebrate the event’s extensive history in the state.
These films will have a special screening at the festival:

- Mysterious Skin (2004)
- Saw (2004)
- Half Nelson (2006)
- Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

The festival will also host artist talks with its alumni, and a celebratory public event will be held on January 30 to thank the Utah community and celebrate more than 40 years in the state.
Robert Redford Tribute
The 2026 Sundance Film Festival will not only mark the event’s final year in Utah but will also serve as a tribute to founder Robert Redford, who passed away on September 16, 2025.
The festival will aim to showcase his impact, legacy, and vision for independent cinema, and a special event will be held in his honor on Friday, January 23, 2026.
Robert Redford’s first independent film, Downhill Racer, will have a commemorative screening, as the project reportedly inspired him to create the Sundance Institute and the Sundance Film Festival.

The 2025 Sundance Film Festival will be broadcast live from the Sundance Film Festival’s official website from January 29 to February 1, 2026.
Film fans across the United States can watch the event at home, but you will need to sign up for a festival account and secure a pass or ticket to watch it.
Alternatively, you can watch the event via the Sundance Film Festival Player app, which is available on FireTV, Apple TV, and Roku.
It is important to note that at-home viewers must watch the event within the allotted time, which will have a set window, such as five hours for feature films.
