The British Academy Television Awards, often known as the BAFTA TV Awards, first took place in 1955 and are regarded as the highest honor in British television.
The iconic event is the TV equivalent of the BAFTA Film Awards (cinema), the BRIT Awards (music), and the Laurence Olivier Awards (theater). Also, it is often held in the same regard as the United States’ Primetime Emmy Awards.
The TV awards were originally presented alongside the BAFTA film awards, hence the name, but the ceremony was split in 1998 to accommodate more categories.
The BAFTA TV Awards shouldn’t be confused with the BAFTA Television Craft Awards, which are typically held each April.
The 2026 Ceremony
The 2026 BAFTA TV Awards will return to the Royal Festival Hall in London on Sunday, May 10, 2026.
The much-loved event will shine a spotlight on the most outstanding British TV productions and performances broadcast between January 1 and December 31, 2025.
Only series that aired to UK audiences during this time are eligible, and they must have a running time of at least three minutes, excluding children’s programming.
TV fans can watch the award ceremony live on BBC One in the UK or stream it live or on demand on BBC iPlayer. Those outside the UK can watch the event on BritBox International.
The host for the upcoming ceremony hasn’t been confirmed, but many fans are hoping Alan Cumming reprises the role after he successfully entertained audiences during the 2025 ceremony.
