When Did the Tour de France Start?

The Tour de France is the oldest and most well-known of the bicycle grand tours, which also includes the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana. In essence, they are the Italian and the Spanish versions of the Tour de France.

The race was started in 1903 as a pitch to increase sales for the newspaper L’Auto and has been held every year since, except from 1915 to 1918 and 1940 to 1946 due to the World Wars.

Today, the race attracts thousands of viewers in person, and in 2024, the viewing of the event globally was one hundred and fifty million people.

The Tour de France starts on July 5, 2025 in Lille, France.

The Route: Where Will The Cyclists Go?

According to the official website, www.letour.fr/en/, there are 21 stages to the race, which are broken down into the early, the middle, and the final stages. This year, eight towns were added to the race, including Lauwin-Planque and Vif.

Grand Départ and Early Stages:

  • Stage One (July 5): The race will begin in Lille, located in the Hauts-de-France region, with a 185 km loop starting and finishing in the city center. ​
  • Stages Two to Four (July 6-8): The route will move westward, passing through Normandy and Brittany, with specific details about these stages yet to be fully disclosed. ​

Mid-Race Highlights:

  • Stage Five (July 9): An individual time trial covering 33 km around Caen. ​
  • Stage 10 (July 14): The first major mountain stage, featuring ascents in the Massif Central, including the Col de la Loze, the highest point of the 2025 Tour at 2,304 meters. ​
  • Stage 13 (July 18): A mountain time trial of 11 km to the Peyragudes Altiport.

Final Stages:

  • Stage 16 (July 22): A 172 km stage from Montpellier to Mont Ventoux, marking the return of this iconic climb to the Tour route. ​
  • Stage 18 (July 24): A challenging stage from Vif to Courchevel, culminating with the ascent of the Col de la Loze.
  • Stage 21 (July 27): The race will conclude with a traditional finish on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. ​
