The Political System in Poland

Global politics are somewhat fascinating because of how different each process for selecting their leader is.

In Poland, the president is elected for a five-year term using a two-round system, similar to the French electoral system. If, during this, no candidate receives most of the votes in the first part, then a run-off is held between the top two candidates. A president serves for the five years and can be re-elected once.

At the current time, President Andrzej Duda is due to finish his second term in office on August 6, 2025, and thus, cannot be re-elected.

Which Party is the Favorite to Win?

Website Polish News reported on a poll that was held relating to the two-round system.

Around 39 percent of the respondents wanted to support Rafał Trzaskowski in the first round of the presidential election. The second highest support was given to Karol Nawrocki, at 23.3 percent. Three percent of the respondents wanted to vote for a candidate on the left, but it should be noted that this poll was taken before Magdalena Biejat’s run was declared.

Should the voting go into a second round, 48.9 percent of respondents said they would vote for Rafał Trzaskowski.

Economic and Social Policies

Andrzej Duda is noted to be of a right-wing leaning political stance, and so is the favorite to replace him, Rafał Trzaskowski. He has some right-wing leanings, and as the election draws closer, it is thought he will lean into this to win more votes.

The policies that are driving the Polish presidential election are linked to economics, with an emphasis on balancing the budget.

The social policy in Poland has also been highlighted as critical to votes, with many in power (and those seeking to win the election) looking to expand on abortion rights. In 2024, there was a vote to decriminalize abortion, and while the vote failed and abortion remains illegal, there are pushes to have this vote retaken.

Voting in the Polish Presidential Election

So, who can vote in the Polish presidential election?
