Spinal Tap 2
- Sep 12, 2025, Worldwide
The 1980s were an interesting time in metal.
There were bands like Guns N Roses, Metallica, and even Iron Maiden taking over the globe by storm and making hair and leather pants a theme.
This was noticed by Rob Reiner, who decided to make the legendary mockumentary comedy film Spinal Tap or This is Spinal Tap in 1984.
This film received mass critical acclaim, but when it was released on VHS, its success was modest. Interestingly, the rerelease in 2002 had the film noted as a cult classic and, obviously, now on DVD, bought in more income.
It came as a bit of a surprise in May 2022 when it was announced that Spinal Tap 2 was being made. Spoofs of the original had occurred since 1984, with one of the most noted being in the Simpsons when the lead singer of Spinal Tap was noted to have said, “this is a rock concert, not the bleedin….splish splash show.” So, to have the band come back for a sequel was met with immense enthusiasm from fans.
If you are a fan of the original or just want to learn a bit more about the franchise, keep reading as everything from the new cast to the release date and even the plot will be explored.

What is the Release Date for Spinal Tap 2?
Spinal Tap 2 is scheduled to be released on September 12, 2025. This seems to be the global release date, which makes it better for fans who don’t want to read spoilers!
What’s the Plot?
Based on the teaser trailer, the plot of Spinal Tap 2 seems to revolve around the band reuniting for a final concert after taking a 15-year break. The aim of the concert is to honor their band manager and to make amends after their falling out in the original film.
On an interesting note, it has been highlighted that the movie will have cameos from Elton John, Garth Brooks, and Paul McCartney. So, the budget has gone up from the original.
Who is Set to Star in Spinal Tap 2?
Robert Reiner has returned to write and direct the sequel, which stars Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer, and Michael McKean reprising their roles as Nigel Tufnel, David St Hubbins, and Derek Smalls. Reiner is also going to return as the documentarian Martin “Marty” DiBergi. So, the original cast is back, adding to the excitement!
Fan Concerns
Even though the original cast is returning, with newcomers and celebrity cameos, fans of the original are posting on websites like Screen Rant that they have concerns following the release of the teaser trailer.
It is, no doubt, a star-studded cast, but fans are worried that an overreliance on cameos may take away from the sequel’s humor. The original was heralded for its original humor, and if there are too many celebs popping up, it could be a distraction or, worse, may point to poor writing.
When Did Filming Begin?
Production began on Spinal Tap 2 in New Orleans, USA in March 2024. The budget for filming was $22.6 million.
Has an Official Trailer Been Released?
